On November 13, Mayor Ronald Alan G. Cesante of Dalaguete City, Cebu, Philippines, who is considering introducing land-based aquaculture using Third Water, and others visited Okayama University of Science, paid a courtesy call to President Hiroyuki Hirano and toured the Education and Research Center for Organism Production, where Assoc. Prof. Toshimasa Yamamoto of the Faculty of Engineering explained about land-based aquaculture.
The group of ten included the mayor and his wife, Mrs. Cesante, and Cebu Provincial Agriculturalist Roldan H. Saragena. Local officials who saw the news of Third Water on an international broadcast have paid attention to the center and have visited several times. However, this was the mayor’s first visit to the center.
On the day of the visit, Mayor Cesante paid a courtesy call to President Hirano, who explained that he was considering introducing land-based aquaculture in the area and asked for cooperation, including the dispatch of personnel, in the commercialization of the project. In response, President Hirano expressed his willingness to cooperate.
The group then visited the Education and Research Center for Organism Production, which has a 35-ton aquarium, and observed sockeye salmon, the world's first commercialized aquaculture project, and two eels swimming around energetically. The group expressed particular interest when Assoc. Prof. Yamamoto mentioned how the water had been in the aquarium for over a year without change. The group asked various questions about initial investment, the material of the tank, feeding, and marketing.
After the visit, Mayor Cesante mentioned his surprise at seeing a land-based aquaculture facility in the mountains. He stated, "We are from a similar area, so this will be a good reference for us." He expressed his strong hope that what he learned today can be utilized to create a land-based aquaculture facility in Cebu to promote the industry.
