Residence Status Support for International Students and Non-Japanese Nationals

Welcome to Okayama University of Science(OUS)! We are committed to providing international students, researchers, and non-Japanese nationals with the necessary support to ensure a smooth transition to life and study in Japan. Below, you will find detailed information on the procedures or acquiring or extending a status of residence.

1. Overview of Status of Residence and Visa

In Japan, a status of residence determines the activities you are permitted to engage in during your stay, while a visa is a document issued by a Japanese embassy or consulate to enter Japan. To study or conduct research at OUS, you must obtain the appropriate status of residence, such as “Student” or “Professor.”

2. Application Procedures

  1. Applicants Residing Outside of Japan (No Current Status of Residence)
If you currently reside outside Japan, you will need to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) before obtaining a visa. This document certifies that you meet the conditions for a particular status of residence in Japan.

[Steps for Obtaining a COE and Visa]
    1. Receive Admission Offer: Ensure you have completed the admission procedure for your desired program at OUS.
    2. Obtain the COE: OUS can apply for a COE on your behalf after you have completed the admission process and submitted all rquired documents. The process takes approximately 1-2 months from the date of application submission, depending on circumstances.
    3. Apply for a Visa: Present the issued COE, your passport, and other required documents to a Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country.
    4. Enter Japan: Present your visa to an Immigration Inspector upon your arrival in Japan.
  2. For Applicants Already Residing in Japan (With Residence Status)
If you are currently residing in Japan and hold a valid residence status, OUS will assist you with the procedures for extension or change of your residence status after your enrollment.
