Global Volunteers Hosts Sri Lankan Cooking Workshop to Promote Cultural Exchange

On Thursday, October 15, the Home Economics Classroom on the 9th floor of Building A1 transformed into a hub of cultural exchange as Global Volunteers (GLOBOLA) hosted an event bringing together Japanese and international students at Okayama University of Science.

The energy was palpable from the start. The event began with a fast-paced game of bingo, encouraging students to interact with one another by finding peers who fit descriptions like "speaks two or more languages," "has siblings," or "plays the piano."

Once the ice was broken, the main feature began: a hands-on Sri Lankan cooking workshop. Divided into four teams, participants tackled two traditional snacks from scratch. Two groups rolled and fried savory cutlets—crispy tuna-and-potato croquettes—while the remaining groups whipped up fragrant coconut milk steamed bread.

Though both recipes required teamwork and technique, participants worked together throughout the cooking process and enjoyed tasting the dishes they had prepared. The event concluded with a group photo,  providing an opportunity for Japanese and international students to connect and experience cultural exchange through cooking.
