On Tuesday, December 16, GLOBOLA held this year’s Christmas party in the B1F All-Purpose Room in the A1 Building. The purpose of the event was to create an opportunity for Japanese and international students to interact with one another while enjoying Christmas-themed activities. Thirty-three students, including GLOBOLA members, participated. The party started by separating everyone into five groups of around seven members who participated in three activities.
Icebreaker The festivities began with a fun icebreaker game called “Christmas Message.” Typically, the object of the game is to test how well a message can be preserved as it is passed verbally from person to person. In this version, each group stood in a line. A teammate in the back of the line sees a Christmas-themed English word written on a whiteboard, such as “gift.” The challenge was to preserve the word from person to person by writing it on the back of the next teammate with their finger. The person in front writes the message on a whiteboard and shows it to the referee.
Movie Contest The next activity was a movie contest. Each group was tasked with making a movie on the theme: Falling In LOVE with Santa. Each group worked together to plan their videos, deciding which props to use, which part each member would play, and even the graphics and music used when editing.
Each group came up with very different and unique videos.
Christmas Tanabata: A Love Story
Lonely Heart Finds Love
Good Santa vs. Evil Santa
Helpful Santa
Reindeer Revenge on Santa
After completing their videos, each group uploaded its video to an online chat forum. The videos were then shown on a screen, and participants voted by a show of hands while enjoying mini Christmas cakes.
Gift Exchange The final activity was the Secret Christmas Gift Exchange. All participants sat in a circle, each holding a random gift contributed by another participant. While listening to “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” the participants passed them left to right until the music stopped. The gift each participant held was the one they received. Inside each present was an unsigned message with a hint identifying the giver. The gifts ranged from fun, like snacks, to practical, like slippers.
The event closed with a commemorative photo of all participants around the Christmas tree while holding their gift.
