ONLINE International Exchange Meeting with Sri Lanka

On Tuesday, February 14, 2023, GLOBOLA members held an online exchange activity with students at Sputnik International Education Centre (Sputnik) in Sri Lanka entitled "ONLINE International Exchange Meeting with Sri Lanka."

GLOBOLA planned and hosted the event via Zoom. Five OUS students, 13 Sputnik students, and 3 OUS faculty and staff members attended.

The event began with an icebreaker activity using an online survey app called Slido. Participants responded to questions such as their favorite food, where they want to travel, and things a university student has on hand. The main activity involved quizzing each other on the meanings of various idiomatic expressions used in Sri Lanka, the U.S., and Japan. For example, a Sri Lankan expression that translates as "a flower blooms on your head" means "I am delighted," while the Japanese expression "as if splitting bamboo" means "forward-thinking." The participants were very excited to see the difference in culture and values between Sri Lanka, the U.S., and Japan.

Participants commented that they enjoyed learning Sri Lankan idioms and that it was interesting to see the differences in lifestyle and language culture by teaching each other.
