IB Educator Certificate Program Students Hold Lab Classes at Dalton Tokyo Junior & Senior High School

OUS IBEC program conducted education observations and classroom practice sessions at a progressive education school.

Since the previous school year, students enrolled in OUS' IBEC program have had the opportunity to practice teaching at Dalton Tokyo Junior & Senior High School, a Dalton Plan-based school that provides learner-centered education. Initially scheduled for last year, the activity was postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, they could finally visit the school on September 9th and carry out their activities.

The IBEC students, in three groups, designed three laboratory activities for Dalton's 7th – 11th-grade laboratory class called "Inquiry Laboratory Time." The class topics were "Fruit Batteries," "The Mystery of the Magic Dice," and "Find the Holes on the Plastic Water Bottles. Throughout the last and current school years, each group presented their lessons, provided peer feedback, and made revisions wherever necessary.

After completing their activities, Dalton's teachers gave their feedback to our students. They were pleased with the class design and how the activities maintained their students' interests and inspired learning, considering how their students continued working through their breaks.

While making this experience a part of their educator competency, our OUS students will further reflect and share their learning with other IBEC students. We will continue to strive so that our students become educators capable of inquiry-based teaching, emphasized in the International Baccalaureate program and the new national Courses of Study.
