Master’s Student from the Inorganic Materials Chemistry Laboratory Wins Symposium Excellent Presentation Award

At the 35th Annual Meeting of MRS-J (Materials Research Society of Japan), held from Monday, November 10 through Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at the Kitakyushu International Conference Center in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Atsushi Yamanaka (a first-year master’s student in the Natural Sciences Course, Graduate School of Science and Engineering, and a graduate of OUS’s Department of Chemistry) received the Symposium Excellent Presentation Award.

Yamanaka presented a poster in Symposium D-4, “Functional Ceramic Materials: Synthesis and Evaluation, and Application Development,” titled “Effects of the Ca/Y Ratio and Crystal Sites on the Luminescence Properties of (Eu)ropium²⁺ in (Ca)lcium–(Y)ttrium–(Si)licon–(O)xygen Phosphors.” In this study, he investigated Ca–Y–Si–O phosphors to determine how the Ca/Y ratio and crystal-site configuration influence the luminescence behavior of Eu²⁺. He reported identifying conditions under which red emission from Eu²⁺ can be obtained under blue-light excitation. These findings are expected to provide important insights that will contribute to the development of new phosphor materials for white LEDs. The award recognized not only the originality of the research and the strength of the supporting data, but also Yamanaka’s clear and thorough presentation.

This research is being conducted as a collaborative project with Associate Professor Ryo Kobayashi (Nagoya University), Professor Tsuneyuki Tomita (Tokai University), and Specially Appointed Professor Makoto Kakihana (Osaka University).
