GLOBOLA Holds Hiroshima Bus Tour!

On Saturday, December 13th, a bus tour to Hiroshima was held for 25 Japanese and international students from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and China, organized by the student group GLOBOLA (Global Volunteer) at Okayama University of Science. This tour was planned to deepen bonds among students and foster cross-cultural exchange.

Enjoying and sharing the history and culture of Hiroshima
After departing from Okayama University of Science, the tour first visited Hiroshima Castle. The students explored the five-story castle in groups and learned about its architecture and history. The students also had lunch in groups. Some members ate the local favorite, Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, while others enjoyed halal food together with the Bangladeshi students.

In the afternoon, they visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, where they learned about the devastation and long-term effects of the atomic bomb on the city and people, and then went on a guided tour of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, where they learned about the efforts that went into rebuilding the city.

On-board activities
On the bus, participants played an icebreaker game called “Unanimous,” where each group used a whiteboard to write or draw their responses to questions such as “What did you eat for breakfast?” or “What do you look forward to seeing during the tour?” Members of each group would ask each other the same question, write or draw the most common response, and share it with everyone else on the bus.

The next activity was a sightseeing quiz in which everyone responded to multiple-choice questions about words used in the Hiroshima dialect (Hiroshima-ben), UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and local history.

Example: What do “tau” and “tawan” mean in Hiroshima-ben?
   1. To reach / To not reach
   2. To walk / To run
   3. Hot / Cold

There was also a photo contest with the theme Peace. Each group had to take pictures while touring the sites, upload their best one to an online group chat, and explain how their photo showed peace. Each group voted on which picture was best.

Returning to Okayama
The bus ride back to Okayama was a quiet one, with almost everyone falling asleep after a day of walking, climbing steps, eating, reading, listening, and more walking.

One student from Bangladesh commented that he enjoyed the bus tour and the many things he learned on the trip. He also commented that he hopes there will be other events like it in the future.
