Promoting Multicultural Understanding through Action: Faculty of Education Students Participate in the “HEART.FULL Expo”

Organized by the Okayama Prefectural Government’s Human Rights and Gender Equality Division, the event aimed to raise awareness and promote action toward solving human rights issues. It also encourages collaboration with young people across the prefecture to advance human rights education and engagement. This year, eight student groups from universities in Okayama Prefecture participated in the event.
Our students hosted a booth where they introduced an original card game and a tool called “Yasa-Nichi Checker,” which helps people reflect on how to communicate effectively with those whose first language is not Japanese. Through these interactive activities, visitors were invited to think about inclusive language and communication in multicultural settings.
The location—AEON Mall Okayama—provided a valuable opportunity for students to engage not only with university peers but also with members of the general public. Visitors shared positive feedback such as, “This made me rethink the way I use language,” and “I learned something useful for communicating with international residents.”
At the closing ceremony, each participating group received a commemorative plaque in recognition of their contributions to promoting human rights awareness.
Through experiences like this, students in the Faculty of Education are developing the skills to communicate, collaborate, and think critically—essential qualities for future educators. We will continue to support and encourage student engagement in activities that connect learning with real-world social issues.
