Cultural Exchange with Students from the U.S. and Brazil —OUS students from the Japanese Language Education Seminar of the Faculty of Education Hosts Hands-On Event

On Wednesday, July 2, students from the Faculty of Education’s Japanese Language Education Seminar hosted a cultural exchange event featuring visiting students from the United States and Brazil, as well as students from our university.

The theme of the exchange was “How to Use Chopsticks and Table Manners.” The event began with OUS seminar students introducing the basics of chopstick use and proper dining etiquette. Participants then practiced using chopsticks and took part in a lively relay game where they used chopsticks to carry various small items—such as sponges, snack packets, and rubber balls—rather than traditional batons. The activity was full of excitement, with both international and OUS students struggling (and laughing) as they attempted to grip slippery objects with chopsticks.

Afterward, participants folded their own chopstick holders using origami paper and placed the chopsticks used in the relay inside to take home as souvenirs. Throughout the event, groups collaborated to devise strategies to win the relay, shared stories about their hobbies and campus lives while folding origami, and engaged in meaningful communication while teaching each other English and Japanese.

For students training to become Japanese language teachers, gaining knowledge of the language and learning teaching skills is essential. Equally important, however, is the ability to introduce Japanese culture and to engage with people from other cultures with curiosity and respect. This exchange provided a valuable opportunity for practical learning in all of these areas.

We look forward to continuing to offer experiences like this that foster global awareness and hands-on learning for our students.
