GLOBOLA members hosted a cultural exchange event at the 11th Floor Lounge in the A1 Building. On Thursday, May 20, 14 students from the Chihlee University of Technology and 30 OUS students came together for an evening of food, game, and lively conversation.
After the students broke into seven groups and sat at designated tables, the event started with opening words from OUS Vice-Dean Naoto Tomioka and Chihlee University of Technology Japanese teacher Ms. Masayo Saeki. After the opening words and a gift exchange, the participants had a dinner consisting of various dishes. While eating, students played a “Get to Know Me” icebreaker game, during which they talked about themselves and their perceptions about each other’s cultures and university life.
The second activity was a spirited game of "Karaoke & Name that Tune," in which participants heard excerpts of eight songs, such as “FEARLESS” by Le Sserafim and “Idol” by Yoasobi. The first person who correctly identified a song had the option of singing it using karaoke. Some of the participants sang more than one song.
The event ended with a commemorative photo, participants taking group selfies, and exchanging contact information to stay in touch.
Many of the participants enjoyed interacting with one another and the karaoke event. Several of the OUS students mentioned that they were surprised by how well the Chihlee students understood Japanese. Some mentioned that they would have liked the event to continue a bit longer and enjoyed learning new things about each other. Because there were many OUS international students, some of the Japanese and Taiwanese students learned more than they expected. Several of the OUS students mentioned that they would like to participate in similar GLOBOLA events in the future.
