On Saturday, April 12, GLOBOLA members hosted the 2025 New Students Welcome Party at the 2nd Floor Lounge in the Kake 50th Anniversary Commemorative Building for 25 new OUS first-year and international students. The event started with an icebreaker activity, during which participants formed five groups: pineapple, durian, mango, tangerine, and papaya. After introducing themselves to their group mates, they engaged in a spirited game of Fruit Basket.
The next activity was an OUS True-False Game. Two areas were divided by a line, one with an O (true) and the other with an X (false). Groups heard statements about the OUS campus and decided together if they were true or false.
For example:
Mission 1: Movie Pose
The groups were shown four movie posters and took photos of themselves in the same pose as the actors. Each group then judged which pose was the best.
Mission 2: Decoding Hieroglyphs
Each group received a secret message written in Egyptian hieroglyphics and had to decipher it using a decoder sheet.
Mission 3: Guess the Country
Each group elected a representative whose mission was to guess from a series of drawings done by its members which country they represented, such as the Eiffel Tower, a soccer ball, the Sydney Opera House, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, or Squid Game characters.
Mission 4: Identifying National Flags
The groups were shown several national flags and had to guess which country they represented using a buzzer.
The event ended with a commemorative photo of GLOBOLA members, OUS staff, and student participants.
After the photo, many participants exchanged contact information to stay in touch with one another. The GLOBOLA New Students Welcome Party received positive responses from the participants in a post-event survey. Many commented that they enjoyed the activities, were happy to make new friends, and their perceptions of people from other countries had changed significantly.
GLOBOLA will hold two information sessions on Tuesday, April 15, in C0143 lecture room and Friday, April 18, in the Home Economics Room on the 9th floor of the A1 Building to recruit new members. We look forward to seeing new faces.
