GLOBOLA Celebrates Christmas

On Tuesday, December 10, GLOBOLA held this year’s Christmas party in the B1F All-Purpose Room in the A1 Building. The event was intended to create an opportunity for Japanese and international students to interact with one another while enjoying Christmas-themed activities. Twenty-eight people, including GLOBOLA members and Global Center staff, participated.

The party divided participants into four teams, A, B, C, and D, which played an icebreaker game called “Paper Cup Jenga.” This popular game variation uses paper cups and requires players to take cups from the bottom, place them on the top, and respond to questions and tasks written on them, such as “Christmas memory” and “Make the sound of your favorite animal.”

The second activity was the “Human Christmas Tree Contest.” One member from each team volunteered to wear a green plastic bag while their teammates had seven minutes to decorate them with Christmas ornaments. Each team worked very well to show its creativity. After their time was up, the four human Christmas trees modeled themselves while one team member described their creations. After careful deliberation, the judges decided that Team C won the contest.

For the third activity, participants heard two presentations about Christmas in Sri Lanka and the Winter Solstice in China. They learned that the Christian holiday is deeply rooted in Sri Lankan culture and that the country holds the Guinness World Record for erecting the tallest Christmas tree, 72.1 meters. Although the Chinese do not celebrate Christmas, the Winter Solstice is a significant event in China. Both presentations included quizzes to test the participants' knowledge. China proved to be the more difficult of the two countries.

The final activity was the Secret Christmas Gift Exchange. All participants sat in a circle with a random gift contributed by someone else. While listening to “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” the participants passed them right to left until the music stopped. The gift each participant held was the one they received. Inside each present was an unsigned message with a hint identifying the giver. The gifts ranged from fun (snacks and games) to practical (pens, pencils, gloves) to funny (toilet paper).

The event closed with a commemorative photo of all participants around the Christmas tree. As of this writing, many participants still talk about how much they enjoyed the GLOBOLA Christmas Party.
