GLOBOLA Brings Sri Lankan Flavors to the Handayama Festival at Okayama University of Science

On Saturday and Sunday, November 23 and 24, Okayama University of Science held its annual Handayama Festival. Among the various attractions, GLOBOLA (Global Volunteers), a student organization dedicated to fostering intercultural exchange and global awareness, participated by offering authentic Sri Lankan cuisine. The event provided visitors with a unique opportunity to experience international flavors. At their booth on the Sky Terrace, GLOBOLA served two Sri Lankan specialties: Chicken Curry and Roti. The team, which included 12 members, three of whom were Sri Lankan international students, worked together to serve a total of 200 meals over the two days (107 on the first day and 93 on the second). The bold, spice-forward flavors delighted festivalgoers, who shared enthusiastic feedback such as, “It’s so good, I came back both days!” and “The spices are amazing-it’s incredibly flavorful.” The dishes sold out quickly on both days, with the team restocking ingredients on the first day to meet demand and continuing to impress visitors on the second.
GLOBOLA’s decision to participate in the festival was driven by their goal to raise awareness about their organization and activities among students. Informational posters highlighting GLOBOLA’s mission and initiatives were displayed at the booth. The event also fostered meaningful cultural interactions; one visitor, who had previously traveled to Sri Lanka, greeted the Sri Kankan students with the word “Ayubowan”-a versatile greeting in Sinhala that means “hello,” goodbye,” “thank you,” and more.
The proceeds from the event will be used to support GLOBOLA’s efforts to enhance the university’s global engagement initiatives. Additionally, part of the funds will contribute to the operation of another food stall event planned for December 1, which will serve the local Okayama City community.
With support from the university’s Global Center, GLOBOLA plans to build on the success of this event by enriching its activities and creating more opportunities for intercultural exchange. Through initiatives like these, students aim to develop broader global perspectives while fostering mutual understanding and cultural appreciation. Okayama University of Science remains committed to supporting these efforts and further establishing itself as a hub for meaningful cultural exchange.
