On Wednesday, June 26, the student visitors from the USA and Brazil and 10 volunteer students, mainly from the Japanese Language Education Seminar of the Faculty of Education, made uchiwa (Japanese fans) together. They pasted decorations made from origami paper and kirigami (paper cutting) onto plain black and white fans and drew their own pictures using ink in various colors.

American and Brazilian students also tried writing the word 'matsuri (festival)' in kanji and hiragana with a calligraphy brush. Calligrapher Shiyou (Ms. Saori Tanabe) assisted them when writing, carefully teaching them how to hold and move the brush. They also wrote their names and words, such as 'friend.' One of the students who had drawn a wonderful dragon picture practiced kanji for 'dragon' many times before writing it on her fan.

At the end of the activity, the origin of the summer festival was explained, and a commemorative photo was taken of everyone wearing happi coats and holding their fans. American and Brazilian students then took part in a summer festival organized by the Global Volunteers (GLOBOLA).

The participating students from the Faculty of Education explained how to make origami and kirigami art and how to use the calligraphy brush while learning about the interests and specialties of American and Brazilian students and deepening their mutual understanding. This cultural experience event turned out to be a great opportunity to connect students from the USA, Brazil, China, Sri Lanka, and Japan.
